With a win over Humboldt State this past Saturday, the men’s soccer team improved to 4-0, their best start to a season since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The Warriors exploded for four goals by four different players and never let the Lumberjacks take a lead.
Jose Ramirez (senior, kinesiology) was credited with the first goal for Stan State and his first of the season early in the game. That proved to be the only score of the first half until the Warriors erupted in the second.
Ryan Chaney (freshman, kinesiology) added another score with his third goal of the season when his shot bounced off of the Lumberjacks’ goalkeeper and into the net. His shot was assisted by Daniel Kuczynski (senior, psychology), who leads the CCAA with four assists.
Danny Valenzuela (sophomore, business administration) added to the lead with his second goal of the season, and the Warriors were cruising until the Lumberjacks’ Brett Alexander got the team on the board to prevent a shutout. Although, the Lumberjacks never found the back of net again in this game.
Kuczynski kept up his impressive start to the season by following up his hat trick game with a goal late in the second half. He now has five goals in only four games, which leads the CCAA.
Not only does Kuczynski lead the CCAA in goals and assists, he also leads in points scored with 14 and is second in shots with 20. Teammate Ryan Chaney is second in the CCAA in goals behind Kuczynski.
In addition to the offensive output, the Warriors were sound on defense with goalkeeper Russ Klabough (senior, criminal justice ) giving up only one goal. Klabough is tied for fifth in the CCAA with only three goals allowed this season.
Stan State looks to keep their undefeated streak alive when they face Holy Names (1-1) at Warrior Stadium on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
