“Turlock represents abundance and beauty in many forms,” Bargetto-Andres said. “Our ‘Ode to Turlock’ highlights these diverse ways that community members see Turlock.”
Dust off your rhyming skills, practice your haiku, and submit your original work to the “Ode to Turlock” poetry contest.
The Modern Languages Program at California State University, Stanislaus in conjunction with Turlock City Arts Commission invites individuals to celebrate the literary arts and submit a typed poem, limited to one page, for the second annual poetry contest. Poetry may be written in English, French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish.
“Just as our community is represented by distinct languages and cultures, we encourage that the poetry celebrating Turlock be written in the language of the participant’s choice,” Dr. Teresa Bargetto-Andres, professor in the Modern Languages and Philosophy Department at CSU Stanislaus, said.
There are four different categories for the contest: I) 19 years and over; II) 18-15; III) 14-13; and IV) 12 and under. In categories I and II, $100 book awards will be given to the first place winners, and $50 book awards will be given to first place winners in the III and IV categories. Second, third, fourth and fifth place winners in each category will be awarded gift cards as well.
The top five winners in each category will be invited to read their poetry on Friday, April 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the CSU Stanislaus Faculty Development Center in Room 118.
“Our first annual ‘Ode to Turlock’ was an enormous success, and we look forward to even greater participation in our second,” Bargetto-Andres said.
All poetry submissions are due by Wednesday, March 28. Send the poetry submission, along with a separate page including your name, category and contact information to [email protected] or by mail to:
