Reggie Jones had a season that no one in Warrior country will ever forget.
Jones became California State University, Stanislaus’ first basketball first-team All-American in history, man or woman, since the program transferred over to Division II in 1989.
Jones stands in at 6-foot-9-inches tall and transferred to CSU Stanislaus from Ohlone Community College in Fremont. In his senior year, he averaged 19.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, all while shooting over 53 percent from field goal range. His three-point shooting was nothing short of outstanding, draining 45 percent of his shots, while shooting over 82 percent in free-throws.
In just two years in Turlock, Jones ascended to ninth on Stanislaus’ all-time scoring list with 891 points.
Jones was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, but decided to go to community college in California before deciding where to ultimately play higher division basketball. While at Ohlone, Jones was the California Community College co-player of the year. This accomplishment was only a preview to the continued success he had here at CSU Stanislaus.
The Warriors finished 16-11 overall and 12-10 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play to finish seventh and reach playoffs in the conference tournament. These were the best marks CSU Stanislaus’ basketball program had seen since the 02-03 team went 18-11, 13-9 to finish sixth, five years before the CCAA began its postseason event. This year’s team lost five conference games by four or fewer points, and the season ended with a 69-67 loss at Cal Poly Pomona in the first round of the CCAA Tournament.
Q: How do you feel about the accomplishments you amassed this past season, especially after a tremendous season making the playoffs in the seventh spot?
A: Well about our accomplishments this past season, I feel like I really wanted us to do more and do something this school has never had and that is a conference championship.
Q: Where do you see the school’s program going from here?
A: I see this program staying competitive in this tough conference and eventually ending up in the top.
Q: Did you ever see yourself reaching this level and perhaps taking it to the next level?
A: Well, after my first year out here, I saw what I could do. And I did see myself reaching this level and playing at a high level once I had the confidence from my teammates and coaches. I definitely see myself performing at the next level as well.
Q: How did you feel about your team this past season?
A: I absolutely loved this team this past year. Everyone from coaches to managers to the last player on the bench, we all had fun this year with little games and challenging each other. I will never forget those guys.
Q: If you could do your college basketball career all over again, what would you change if anything?
A: I wouldn’t change anything. I have been all over the United States for basketball and it has given me a lot of things.
Q: When and how did you find out that you had made the D-2 first-team All-American?
A: I found out from my teammate Clinton Tremling via Twitter that I was an All-American, but I thought it was just his way of expressing how he felt about this past season. But, when my coach [Larry Reynolds] texted me, I knew it was for real.
