Note from the Editor: This story was originally published in 2012. We have republished it with the hope that it will inspire our community to take time this year to help others less fortunate.
1. The Salvation Army will be providing a Thanks-for-Giving Dinner on Nov. 24 at noon at the Modesto Centre Plaza, which is located on 1000 L Street, next to the Double Tree Hotel. Volunteers 18 years or older (or 12 to 17-years-old with a parent) are welcome to help set/clean up, assist with pictures, participate in face painting and serving dinner. Volunteer shifts are available from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. You may also donate nonperishable canned foods or money. If you are interested in participating, contact the volunteer center at 209-524-1307.
2. Another event you could volunteer for is a Day of Hope in Turlock. California State University, Stanislaus’ Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is hosting a food collection and distribution to provide 500 Thanksgiving baskets to hungry families in the community. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., where volunteers will fill boxes with a Thanksgiving Day meal and additional food items. Volunteers may also deliver these boxes to the needy on Sunday, Nov. 20. Contact Christopher Scott at 209-304-4291 to volunteer.
3. Taking time out of your day to spend time with senior citizens is another way you can give back for Thanksgiving. A new friend for the holidays is a special way to celebrate the holiday season. Local care homes, convalescent hospitals and retirement facilities throughout Stanislaus County seek friendly visitor volunteers to take an active role in the events and festive activities available throughout the holiday season. Volunteers may help put up decorations, serve meals and refreshments, visit with seniors and participate in activities. To volunteer, contact the Modesto Volunteer Center at 209-524-1307.
4. Not everyone has the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving at home with their families, especially soldiers. If you want to make this Thanksgiving a day to remember, participate in Treats for Troops by creating a care package and maybe even a letter for a troop. No matter where the troops are, they will be reminded that people care and are thankful for the freedom we have. To participate in Treats for Troops, contact 866-842-1050.
