Turlock firefighters support the fight against breast cancer throughout the month of October by promoting a movement to wear and sell pink t-shirts.
Over the last several years, the International Association of Fire Fighters across North America has participated in breast cancer awareness events throughout the month of October.
“This is Turlock Firefighters [Local] #2434 first year participating in cancer awareness,” Turlock Fire Engineer of Station 3 Matthew Mason said. “All Turlock firefighters will be wearing pink shirts during the month of October to fight breast and all other cancers.”
Mason encourages California State University, Stanislaus students to buy shirts and donate money to the cause to raise the awareness of the fight against cancer. CSU Stanislaus students can also participate in the events to raise awareness.
“I would definitely buy a t-shirt to help raise awareness because I think it is important to keep people aware of the risks of breast cancer,” Brandon Dawkins (junior, Criminal Justice) said.
Not only will the firefighters be wearing shirts, they will be participating in events to campaign the fight against cancer. Turlock fire department will be attending the Women’s Breast Cancer Night Out as ushers on Oct. 16 at Monte Vista Chapel. Shirts will be available for purchase.
The Turlock Fire Department will also be working with Chili’s Restaurant in Turlock, located on Countryside Drive, to host a fundraiser all day on Oct. 25. Visit turlockfirefighters.org or the Turlock Journal to receive a flyer to bring to Chili’s that Thursday to have 15 percent of the check go to Emanuel Cancer Center. Just give the flyer to the waiter or waitress who takes the bill to ensure the 15 percent is donated. T-shirts will also be available that night at Chili’s.
“I would totally attend the Chili’s event to help raise awareness,” Jasdeep Dhanota (sophomore, Criminal Justice) said.
T-shirts are $15 each in both men and women sizes. T-shirts may be purchased online at www.turlockfirefighters.org or in person at the Emanuel Medical Center Gift Shop located at 825 Delbon Avenue, in Turlock. Gift shop hours are Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The gift shop t-shirt stock will be available from now until Oct. 31.
T-shirts are also available at the Turlock Farmers Market, which is held on Friday mornings from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the corner of Broadway and Main Street in Downtown Turlock.
The proceeds from all t-shirt sales will go to Emanuel Cancer Center in Turlock.
