The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer (LGBTQ) community held a Pride festival on Sept. 15 at Graceda Park in downtown Modesto to celebrate diversity and acceptance. People came out to show pride in their lifestyle by doing drag or sporting the rainbow. The music was lively and ranged from the classic Led Zepplin to Rianna, Katy Perry and Flo Rida. The 21 and over crowd migrated to the Beer and Wine Garden for some refreshments, while the youth would gather around in the Teen Garden.
“Today is about equality,” Modesto resident Michael Hamby said. “Acceptance will make Modesto a better community.”
Modesto has come a long way and this event gave the LGBTQ community a way to catch up with old friends and to also meet new ones.
“I love everyone getting together and celebrating their diversity,” CSU Stanislaus alumni Nathan Lovaas said.
People had their own reasons for wanting to come out to Pride. Randy Ortega enjoyed being with a large group of people that he knew would accept him.
More and more homosexuals expressed how they are becoming more comfortable with showing who they really are in the Modesto community.
“In such a conservative environment it is surprising a event like this can thrive,” Modesto resident Matthew Mason said.
Along with people enjoying themselves at the festival, many groups came out to either show support or offer their services to those of the LGBTQ community. Groups such as The Place, B92.9, Coca-Cola and the Democratic Club all set up booths.
People from all walks of life came out to support Modesto Pride and a lifestyle where labels do not matter. The Modesto community enjoyed a day of celebrating with others who also believe in acceptance, tolerance and equality. There is hope within the community that this event will continue to thrive in Modesto.
