It’s that time of year again: Graduation season. With graduation season comes a list of items future graduates must make sure to check off, which includes things like buying all the graduation regalia as well as passing finals before the ceremony.
During the Grad Fair at California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State), which took place from April 12-14, graduates were able to buy their cap and gowns as well as the many other accessories that can be worn during graduation. One of the most popular accessories is the graduation stole.
Unfortunately, as those who already bought the stole are probably aware of, there has been a spelling error within the university seal logo on the stole. Instead of the word “California” on the bottom end of the right side of the stole, it reads “Califorina,” with the “I” and “N” inverted.
In an email sent out to graduates on April 13, the managers of the Stan State bookstore, Janelle Maiwald and Melissa Jackson, apologized for the mistake and gave graduates advice on how to go about with their misspelled stoles.
“It was brought to our attention yesterday that ‘California’ has a spelling error on the stole that some of you have purchased in the bookstore,” their email stated. “We apologize for the error and we have reached out to the factory that made the stoles for us so they could begin producing replacements. They will be placed at the top of the priority list for the factory’s error and begin production as soon as possible. We don’t have a date for delivery at the moment, but we should have an estimate by the end of the day.”
The email also explains that when the new stoles come into the bookstore, soon-to-be graduates who have already bought the misspelled stoles should come in and swap them out.
Graduates are welcome to return their misspelled stoles as long as they have the receipt; however, they should be aware that if they do decide to return it, they are not guaranteed a replacement one.
“It’s crazy that they didn’t catch the error until the last day of the Grad Fair. I hope that the new ones come soon. As much as I love the irony, I don’t want to graduate with my English degree wearing a stole with a misspelling,” Mariah Esparza (graduate, English) said.
