The spring semester has started, and California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State), is ready to celebrate homecoming week from Feb. 12–16. It will conclude its festivities with the StanFest live concert on Feb 18.
Homecoming is a time when students reconnect with each other and show the pride and spirit of Stan State.
Throughout the week of February 12–16, there will be various events going on in the quad. These events are for students, alumni, faculty and members of the community to attend and have fun.
Homecoming
Homecoming week begins with Stan Skate, which will be on Sunday, Feb. 12 at the Fitzpatrick Arena at 10 a.m. Students and members of the community are welcome to attend Stan Skate, where roller skates will be provided so that everyone can skate around the gym. There will also be face paintings, caricature artists, food and many other activities.
“I’m going to try and take my daughter to Stan Skate so she can have some fun,” Jessica Acosta (sophomore, Business) said.
“This will also give me the opportunity to spend more time with my daughter, and she will also have fun and will be able to skate.”
On Monday, Feb. 13, the homecoming kickoff will take place in the quad from 11 a.m.–2 p.m., and its purpose is to tell everyone in Stan State about homecoming in order to get them excited about the event.
On Tuesday, Feb. 14, there will be a Speed Dating Game in the quad from 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. This game is correlated with Valentine’s Day.
On Wednesday, Feb. 15, it will be Warrior Wednesday, and there will be fun activities in the quad from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. There will be a video showcase at the event center from 4 p.m.–6 p.m. as well.
On Thursday, Feb. 16, it will officially be the homecoming game of Stan State vs. Chico State. The women’s basketball game will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Fitzpatrick Arena. Following the women’s basketball game, the men’s basketball game will be at 7:30 p.m., which will also in the Fitzpatrick Arena.
Jonny Bustamante (senior, Marketing) is part of Code Red and said that on Wednesday, Feb. 15, a new project that was created this semester is also going to be presented.
The project is called Homie Project, and it’s to bring awareness to the people who are struggling in our communities. It is not just about the homeless people, but also about students who are having trouble making ends meet.
StanFest
Stan State and the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) are ending homecoming week with a live concert where Kehlani and Marc E. Bossy will be performing on Feb. 18 at the Stan State Fitzpatrick Arena.
Kehlani is an Oakland native who sings R&B, and when she was in the eighth grade, she was a member of the group named Poplyfe. Her band was part of the show “America’s Got Talent,” but they did not win the competition. Her 2014 mixtape, “Cloud 19,” introduced her to the world.
The hit songs that she is known for are “CRZY” and “Gangsta.” “Gangsta” was part of the “Suicide Squad” soundtrack, which gave her international popularity.
Kehlani is on her Sweet Sexy Savage World Tour, and Stan State is part of her tour.
“We are proud to say we got her just in time,” Bustamante said.
Marc E. Bassy is the other artist who is also going to perform at StanFest. He was born in San Francisco, but he’s an artist based in Los Angeles. He has composed hit songs for Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, 2 Chainz and many other singers.
One of Bassy’s hit songs is “You and Me,” and it was the lead song and opening track of his second extended play, “Groovy People” (2016), which debuted and peaked at number 148 of the Billboard 200.
StanFest is not just for students who attend Stan State. Members of the community are also welcome to attend the concert.
Rosemary Cervantes, a member of the community, will be attending StanFest for the first time ever. She had never heard about StanFest and cannot wait to experience this great opportunity of seeing Kehlani perform live for the first time.
“A close friend invited me, and I accepted because I know that it will be very fun and that it will give me an opportunity to meet new people. And I can’t wait,” Cervantes said.
The pre-sale tickets are going to be sold through Feb. 17 until 5 p.m. at the University Student Union Service Desk. For more information on homecoming events and StanFest, please visit the Stan State website.
