The MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán) club is hosting “La Lucha Sigue” this weekend.
It will be a three day event that will be happening Friday through Sunday, Nov. 10 through the 12. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to march in nearby cities, in protest of Congressman Jeff Denham’s new ENLIST act.
Gloria Vallin (senior, Communication Studies), former sergeant of arms and external representative, had concerns for students who are currently seeking higher education.
“Those serving in the military for four years are able to have a gateway towards citizenship, and that’s all good, except what about our 800,000 students who actually go to college or a university,” Vallin said.
The march will go through Merced to Livingston on Friday, Livingston to Turlock on Saturday and Turlock to Modesto on Sunday.
Special speakers like Virginia Madueno, a democratic candidate for Congress, will be attending the march and giving a speech on Sunday. The event has been promoted to cities all around the Turlock area.
“We have printed 10,000 flyers and [have] been distributing them throughout campus,” Vallin said.
Flyers have also been distributed around local towns like Gustine, Los Banos, Newman, Los Palos, Winton, Livingston, Patterson, Ripon, Oakdale, Salida and Modesto.
“We want an immigration form that will protect everyone to stay here and continue what they are doing,” Vallin said.
Yvette Schopp (senior, Communication Studies) is a Students for Quality Education (SQE) member. She stated that she is planning to attend this march and encourages other students to attend the march as well.
“I am planning to attend because we need to bring attention to this cause. We also need a permanent solution for the [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] recipients, and we need to pass a clean Dream Act,” Schopp said.
“I think other students should join because they should stand in solidarity with all students,” Schopp added.
Rosa Flores (freshman, Political Science), secretary of MEChA, also encourages students to march. “This march that we are having this weekend is not just Hispanic, it’s for all immigrants or all races.”
