The University Police Department (UPD) at California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) strives everyday to form strong relationships within our community. To further their connection with the campus’ students, faculty and staff, UPD organizes a program called Citizen Academy, which allows participants to learn about law enforcement and other activities related to the campus’ safety.
The Citizen Academy will begin on Sep. 20 and continue through Nov. 20. Participants will be meeting every Wednesday night with Lieutenant Clint Strode, at 6 p.m. in the UPD building.
“During the meetings we talk about services provided by the University Police, how 911 and police dispatching works, what the Clery Act is and police use of force. We also have several hands-on learning activities like fingerprinting, traffic enforcement and DUI enforcement,” Lt. Strode explained.
The objective of Citizen Academy is about forming relationships, demystifying police work on our campus and showing participants basic police training in an effort to bring insight and awareness into officer decision making.
“I have been hearing about this academy a lot lately, and have been definitely considering doing it soon. I’m interested in the Citizen Academy because I feel like it could be a foot in the door for possible Criminal Justice opportunities,” Matthew Rodriguez (junior/Criminal Justice) said.
This program is limited to 16 participants. Lt. Strode makes an effort to include a diverse cross section of different academic majors. With limited space, participants will be getting a more valuable and personal experience allowing every student to participate and interact in each activity.
