According to College Student Employment records, 43 percent of undergraduates were working full-time jobs in 2015.
70 percent to 80 percent of college students are active in the labor market and formally enrolled in secondary education, which makes up 8 percent of the total labor force according to researchers at Georgetown University.
Working and being a student full time does not agree with everyone, however many do not have a choice.
California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) student, Nicole Rodgers (junior, Communications), finds that “managing to juggle working full-time and going to school full-time can be very stressful and overwhelming at times.”
Rodgers is just one of many students who finds having a full schedule to be stressful.
Nonetheless, working while studying can have positive effects on one’s career.
Georgetown researchers found that students who complete college degrees while working are more likely to transition to managerial positions with higher wages over time.
Lucas Hobizal (senior, Liberal Arts), works over 40 hours each week and is enrolled in four courses.
Hobizal sets boundaries to work and school by communicating with his managers and professors about his rigorous schedule and also has an attentive planner to make sure he manages his time sufficiently.
“I place strategic boundaries and I have adapted strong time management skills which have helped me adapt and enjoy my full schedule through the years” says Hobizal.
Communication Studies professor, Dr. Marcy Chvasta, once endured the life of an undergraduate who also worked full-time.
As students balance seeking their degrees while earning money and gaining work force skills, professors like Dr. Chvasta state that everyone can benefit from an education and working.
“It taught me the value of money, the importance of time management, and how valuable a university education is to any citizen of this country,” states Chvasta.
