On Monday, February 15 from 2-3 p.m. PST, Stan State’s Dr. Aletha M. Harven, associate professor for Department of Psychology and Child Development, is hosting the next installment of her Transformative Conversations series, “Acknowledging America’s Past Atrocities.”

Joined by Dr. Ivory A. Toldson, professor of Counseling Psychology at Howard University, the pair will be discussing “how critically understanding past events that are commonly brushed aside by our government will help us in combating systemic racism.”

Harven hosted a conference this past August aimed at discussing the obstacles those in the Black community face in higher education, a conference where she was also joined by Toldson. While a large portion of that event was designed with faculty in mind, Harven hopes to have as many people from the Stan State community, including students, attend. 

This year’s Black History Month may feel different for many. Charged with the energy and momentum from this past summer’s social unrest and a new presidential administration leading our nation, activism, education and conversations dealing with our nation’s dark past are becoming more and more commonplace. Especially at this time in our history where healing is a top priority for many, the work of people like Harven may prove critical.
