As the semester comes to a close, many students are spending an increased amount of time studying in order to end their classes on a high note.
Abby Solis, Transition Leader for the Transition Program at Stan State, hosted the latest Study Tips Workshop for students trying to perfect their study habits.
The event focuses on providing advice to students on how to study smarter and not harder. With finals approaching, many students may begin to reconsider some of their study habits so they may be successful and finish the semester strong.
Some of the main tips from the zoom meeting included the following.
- Focus on active ways to study and look further beyond simply reading the text.
- Organize the information by topic and reread any written notes.
- Create a quiz and if possible, utilize a classmate and quiz each other either via zoom or in person when possible.
- For more technical classes, break down the problems and explain the steps and why they work.
- Develop symbols that represent concepts.
- Study in terms of question, evidence, and conclusion.
- Set a schedule and stick to set studying sessions for consistency.
Another important factor when studying that was discussed was the need to stay active in the approach to doing assignments. Often times, being active assists students in making sure that their focus stays on the assignment while also limiting multitasking.
Another important aspect to address when studying is the need to take a break every now and then.
“Since you are eliminating these distractions and you are avoiding multitasking you need to reward yourself with a break,” explained Solis.
Stress can make it harder to learn and retain information, making the need to take an occasional break even more important. Whether students choose to go for a walk outdoors to get some fresh air or even simply take a quick nap, taking some time away from staring at a computer screen or textbook can help students in the long run as long as it is done responsibly.
For students interested in attending the final Study Tips Workshop of the semester, the next event will take place on December 7 via zoom.
