The California State University, (CSU), system had officially prohibited all forms of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation based on protected status, including age per executive order (EO) 1097 in 2015.
However, it was not until 2017 that the age criterion/exemption in the general education (GE) Area E2 was brought up by Dr. Kimberly Greer, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
GE Area E2 includes all of the one-unit physical education activities that many students at Stanislaus are required to take. Currently students age 25 years or older at time of entry into Stan State will not be held to the activity requirement 
Students at Stan State shared their feelings about the subject
Jaynie Rowe, (sophomore, Math) is aware of the age requirement, and thinks it is appropriate.
“I think it’s reasonable. Older people who are going back to school shouldn’t necessarily have to take a P.E. class,” said Rowe.
Bridget Martinez (junior, Communication Studies), felt that there should be a reason other than age to be exempt for this requirement.
“Unless there is some exact reason why this person can’t do physical activity then I would understand, but what are the other reasons why,” said Martinez.
Shawna Young (Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs) could not explain the original reasons behind the age exemption.
“After researching archives, the University found no written justification explaining the purpose of the age criterion/exception,” said Young via email
The University Educational Policies Committee and its General Education Subcommittee are working to develop a curriculum proposal that meets the requirements of the relevant EOs.
The University is holding open forums and soliciting University-wide feedback through an online submission platform for suggestions for the redesign of the University’s General Education program to comply with new policies related to GE, including EO 1100 and EO 1097.
