Koichi Yamamoto gave an artist talk of his exhibition “Aspect Ratio” that will be open until Apr. 13 at Stan State’s Art Gallery. 
There are a variety of pieces with the concept of symmetry playing a big role in each. There is an installation of kites throughout the ceiling.
Yamamoto’s inspiration behind his work is “curiosity. I want to know and make and combine things. I cannot afford not to know.”
He wants to showcase the process of studying how to make the kite and how the kite is used in ritual, religious and social events.
When looking at the pieces located in the gallery, Yamamoto suggested to “Imagine how kites fly. The balance between lift and drag.”
Yamamoto also encourages any student to learn the art of printmaking.
“Students to learn about printmaking, interact understand because it’s in everyday life,” he said.
Martin Azevedo (Assistant Professor of Graphic Arts) said “Something that is important is that people are exposed to the contemporary art world. Which you are not exposed to readily in Turlock. Instead of making the trip to San Francisco, Sacramento or Los Angeles the art gallery provides students and the community with relevant contemporary art in a local setting.”
“People from the Central Valley aren’t exposed to this kind of artwork in there daily lives and the fact that we are bring different artist and artwork from around the country gives students an opportunity,” Alejandro Fernandez (senior, Fine Arts) said.
“The artist we have should inspire the community and the visitors in the gallery to interact with the work both directly and indirectly,” Christopher Benson (senior, Fine arts) said.
