Yesterday, Joel Orozco (senior, Communications) hosted an event for his capstone project in the efforts to help students manage their stress in an efficient way.
Hailey Simmerman (senior, Communications), attendee of the event, learned that the stress reduction activities are “doable at home.”
The event taught students and other attendees that one of the ways to de-stress is by venting to those close to you.
Orozco said that venting helps because you’re putting your problems “out there.”
He also covered a simple breathing exercise and meditation.
The breathing exercise has it that you can simply inhale while your stomach expands, hold it and exhale.
Orozco added that this breathing exercise works by “helping you relax and lose tension.”
In terms of meditating, Orozco said that “meditation helps the same way the breathing exercise does, except it develops a better sense of clearing your mind.”
Simmerman also thought that meditation and deep breathing were some practical things that could be applied to her life.
Lastly, Orozco taught the students and other attendees that painting is also something they could do to de-stress.
Orozco is also having another stress reduction event Apr. 19 at the Art Quad from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., where students can paint, make their own stress balls and experience the breathing and meditation techniques firsthand.
