The Warrior Grill, Main Dining and Pops are all places to grab some lunch on campus. From smoothies to taco salads, they have it all. Many students buy their meals at these places every day, but is it really worth it?
Convenience is definitely why these places actually get business.
If you’re grabbing a snack between classes or meeting a group for a class project then it’s the most logical place to meet, but I wouldn’t suggest eating every meal on campus or your wallet will get noticeably thinner.
Campus food prices are not in the budget for the average college student.
Personally, I would rather walk to the nearby Campus Vista for a Hot Pocket, chips and Snapple for $4 than fork out almost $9 on campus for almost the same thing. I’m not saying I never eat campus food. Campus food is just so useful when you need it, it’s hard not to drop by.
Occasionally I will save my walk across the street and grab some lunch from Main Dining, but it isn’t something I want to make a habit. When Main Dining offered sushi last week I wasn’t going to miss it, and it actually was pretty tasty.
Having lunch on campus has turned into a treat for myself, and I think that’s how it should be. It’s just unrealistic to be buying it everyday.
I’m not suggesting that we all boycott campus food or anything, because it is great every once in awhile.
However, I do think students should take advantage of what else the university has around it. If you don’t mind spending the same amount that you would on campus, but feel like trying something new, take a walk across Monte Vista and enjoy authentic Persian cuisine at Patogh.
If you are trying to keep your spending to the minimum, like most students, then dropping by Campus Vista will serve your wallet much better than Main Dining or the Warrior Grill.
Even though campus food prices do not coincide with good spending habits, it accommodates students’ class and work schedules.
So, go grab a taco salad and iced tea on your way from Bizzini to Naraghi, just be aware that eating on campus isn’t your only option.
