California State University, Stanislaus police officer Aimee Powers is being recognized for multiple honors both statewide and locally for her efforts against drunk driving along with her contributions to the community.
Powers will be receiving the California Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) during the national organization’s statewide law enforcement event on June 1 in Sacramento. She has also been named Officer of the Year by the Stanislaus Civilian club.
“I am honored to receive these awards and was completely shocked when I heard the wonderful news,” Powers said.
MADD is honoring law enforcement officers throughout California, specifically for their efforts towards stopping drunk driving and underage drinking.
Power’s explained how law enforcement has played a major role in her life.
“Both of my parents served in different entities of law enforcement, I knew no other way than to protect and serve.”
According to her fellow officers, Powers has consistently led the department in drunk driving arrests and participating in saturation patrols, exceeding performance standards.
“I am grateful to my department for allowing me the ability to tackle an issue such as drunk driving with not only enforcement of the law but prevention as well,” Powers said.
Powers has embarked on many outreach and prevention efforts. She took part in the Thirsty Thursday alcohol awareness program, the university’s Fatal Vision Goggles demonstration, as well as Students Managing Alcohol Responsibility Together (SMART) Day program.
“I had set out 2012 with a goal of being proactive against drunk drivers. Drunk driving affects everyone from our students to the Turlock residents, from my family to yours. So I was hopeful that I could make some positive effect.”
According to Police Chief Steven Jaureguy, Powers’s achievements have been the result of dedication, hard work and a balanced approach.
“Aimee’s achievements did not come about by accident or because of entitlement but rather through her dedication and years of hard work,” Jaureguy said.
“Officer Powers has earned these recognition awards by applying the key elements of character, commitment and competence. “
In addition to her multiple other awards, Powers will be recognized by the Stanislaus County chapter of Civilian International for serving individual and community needs, with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.
As a CSU Stanislaus alumni, Powers graduated from CSU Stanislaus in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Following graduation, Powers joined the University Police Department in December 2010 and won Rookie of the Year a year after her recruitment.
“Officer Aimee Powers is a good role model for our students and other young professionals,” Jaureguy said.
“Her success is a direct result of putting integrity first, placing service before self and striving for excellence in all that she does.”
For Powers, the dedication goes beyond any award or recognition.
“I have a great passion for helping those that cannot help themselves and keeping our campus and community safe.”
