An open forum held May 6 will provide chancellor of the California State University, Dr. Timothy P. White and two Board of Trustees members an understanding of the CSU Stanislaus campus, its operations and educational effectiveness.
The forum will also serve as an opportunity for the campus community to assess the performance of current interim president Dr. Joe Sheley.
President Sheley has built a more quiet reputation on campus, especially following past and recent controversy surrounding his predecessor, former president Hamid Shirvani. Students around campus had few remarks on Sheley, and as one student inferred, few complaints.
“I figure he must be doing a good job because I haven’t heard anything about him, and you typically hear more about people who are doing a really bad job,” Mark Fischer (senior, Psychology) said.
Sheley formerly served as provost and vice president at California State University, Sacramento, among several other positions during his 10 years with the university. Prior to his time at Sacramento State, Sheley spent 21 years in a faculty position at Tulane University, later serving as chair of the Department of Sociology as well as faculty head of the University Senate.
During his first presidential address at CSU Stanislaus, Sheley promoted community involvement on campus and outlined the economic challenges the university was facing. In that same September address, Sheley forecasted and recognized the importance of Proposition 30 passing for the financial well-being of the university.
Brian Duggan, Director of Learning Services, Office of Information Technology had good words to say about the president’s time spent at the university.
“In my work with faculty, I have heard only positive comments about Interim President Sheley – and from my own observations, I believe his leadership skills and experience are a good match for our university.”
The open forum will be held in the Mary Stuart Rogers Educational Services building, room 130, from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Anyone who cannot attend the open forum but wishes to share their thoughts on President Sheley’s tenure may email [email protected] with their input.
