The city of Turlock has many unique aspects that make it stand out from other cities in the Central Valley. It has its own hot dog place in Footers, its very own hookah lounges with Xhale and Fire Temple and now its very own burger joint with the opening of Alcatraz Burger today, Sept. 29.
Opening directly across the street from California State University, Stanislaus, Alcatraz Burger hopes to add a new and exciting option for students and area residents.
Located off Crowell Road, next door to the well-known Main’ly Bagels, Alcatraz Burger promises to buck expectations of the boring and all-too-common burger joint by introducing their high-quality burgers to our small college town.
With their one-of-a-kind burger names, inspired by the former inmates of the actual prison, Alcatraz Burger is aiming to be a stand-alone restaurant in Turlock and become the place to go when people want to get a bite to eat.
The burgers run a bit pricey, with the most expensive sandwich — #85, the Al Capone — coming out to $11.99. You definitely get what you pay for, however, considering that the patties are made with freshly ground beef, and the portion sizes are more than generous.
So far, their most popular dish would seem to be #110, the Charming Roy Gardner ($8.99), which comes with bacon, caramelized onions, lettuce and tomato. The burger is monstrous, and a touch greasy around the edges, but the caramelized onion adds a special sweetness to the bacon cheeseburger— a burger joint staple.
The restaurant also serves hot dogs, hot wings and garnished fries if a big time burger proves too much for one patron to handle. The #1518 “Mickey Cohen” Fries offer the choice of either regular or steak fries and are loaded with the customer’s choice of cheese and caramelized onions.
For area residents hankering for a hoosegow hamburger, head on down to the Alcatraz Burger — the best “prison food” you’ll ever eat.
