The Omega Nu Omega fraternity is hosting a World AIDS Day event and barbecue on Dec. 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Quad at California State University, Stanislaus.
With support from Code Red Entertainment, the Student Health Center and more, there will be games and fun events planned throughout the day as well as a barbecue, with all proceeds being donated to Community Impact Central Valley. A guest speaker is also planning to talk to students.
Later in the evening, there will be a movie night in the Event Center where free food will be offered, taking place from 5-8 p.m.
World AIDS Day is celebrated nationwide on Dec. 1, but the event will be observed on Dec. 3 in hopes of reaching the most students.
Students are encouraged to wear red that day to show their support for AIDS awareness. Banners will be on display campus-wide as well as red ribbons in the Student Union and on some Greek tables and booths. The red ribbon is the symbol for AIDS awareness.
“The idea of the event is to bring awareness to a campus where awareness is lacking,” said Event Coordinator Davonte Wilson. “Many think this a ‘gay person’s’ disease. The goal is to show this is not the case.”
AIDS is an autoimmune disease afflicting one million people in the United States and 35 million people worldwide, according to www.aids.gov. There is no known cure for AIDS, but researchers are working hard to improve quality of life for those affected by the virus.
