In the business world, the primary social platform for connecting with others is known as LinkedIn. LinkedIn offers networking, career development, and resume building to help individuals be successful in their career paths.
Staff members from the Career and Professional Development Center at CSU Stanislaus give tips and tricks to perfect your LinkedIn.
Jaskaran Dhesi, a career counselor, explains how crucial a summary is and that it needs to go beyond your name and major.
“You want to have a descriptive summary, which includes your area of study, interests in the field, and what you bring to the field,” he said. “Not only should the summary be work based, but it should highlight experiences and achievements that will help compliment you.”
So, how do we connect with alumni and others on LinkedIn? Rebecca Stephens, employer and student engagement analyst, provides great advice on ways we can connect.
“Search for Stan State alumni on the platform,” she said. “Many alumni are eager to chat with you and offer advice. Ask to schedule an Informational Interview to learn about their experience in the transition from college to career.”
She added that if you are wanting to connect with locals, you can search specific employers and contact individuals that work for that corporation.
Nang Thao, a career coach, gives last minute tips as you reflect on your LinkedIn profile as a whole.
“Before you start, take some time to reflect on the questions, who you are, why you’re here and what you’re looking for,” she said. “Clarifying things like your goals, values and interests will aid you in creating an account that tells a story about you, make an impression and why someone should connect with you or hire you.
She added if you find that you’re in need of help, review some profiles with similar interests for inspiration.
Overall, when building your LinkedIn profile, be yourself because recruiters are curious to know who you are. Share experiences that can help you stand out in a group of applications. It’s also important to include your LinkedIn profile name on your resume.
