The newest bar in downtown Turlock, The Udder Place, is co-owned by California State University, Stanislaus alumnus Jerry Powell. He graduated in 1998 earning his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with the concentration in Finances.
The Udder Place is located at 110 W Main Street and is open seven days a week from 11-1 a.m.
“We’re open to have students bring in their lunch, like ordering a pizza and having a beer or a glass of wine while working on their schoolwork using our free Wi-Fi,” Powell said.
There are cowhides on the wall and there is also cowhide-covered furniture. In the back area, there is room to sit and converse, but if you want to watch a game, there is a big projector set up for that. Powell plans on knocking down the wall opposite of the bartender area to make it bigger to bring in local live music.
“I felt like the town lacked a nice clean bar with a Western/Country theme since we live in a rich agricultural area,” Powell said.
There are oil-looking lanterns hanging to give the Western feeling, along with Country music playing. One of the greatest things about the décor was the ability to re-use wood for the bar. Powell was able to get re-claimed wood from a San Francisco church that was built in 1906. The wood from the church has been used for the siding, bar top and shelving where the alcohol is being shown or stored.
Powell has other obligations other than running The Udder Place; he is involved in a commercial real estate group in which he has various partners all over Northern California. He also happens to have his own company, PC Construction Group Inc. One of their major contracts is being in charge of developing Rite Aides.
“I want to make a small venue in downtown to bring it back up and for people to have fun in a nice warm environment,” Powell said.
