This past weekend, the California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) Theatre Department put on one of their original performances, SKOMEDY. It is an all-original sketch show, meaning that the students designed, wrote, directed, produced and performed the show.
There were 13 hilarious skits that made up the show. Every skit focused on important issues that many college students and society as a whole faces. While there was seriousness to each issue, the actors were able to put their own comedic twist to the story.
Problems ranged from the bad planning of a 21st birthday party to getting horrible advice from the campus advisers. Each of skits were only a few minutes long, but the performers did a wonderful job addressing some controversial topics while giving the audience a chance to laugh.
One skit that really made the audience laugh was “Full Mexican.” It focused on two girls who go to a Mexican restaurant to get the “full Mexican experience.” Upon ordering the full Mexican, they are taken out to the desert and put through a multitude of tests including crossing the border and escaping immigration patrol. After a gruesome battle and successfully crossing the border, they are given their authentic Mexican dinner to complete the full Mexican experience.
The show was first performed in March, but they revived it and started rehearsing it again in order for it to be entered into the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival this upcoming April.
The SKOMEDY shows are now over, but you can look forward to more performances by the Stan State Theatre Department. The Constellations performance will be held Nov. 12-14 and 20-22 at 8 p.m., and Nov. 15 and 22 at 2pm. For more upcoming shows visit the Theatre Department here.
