Mediasite, a technology platform for video capture, management, and delivery, currently operates in five classrooms at California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State).
Three classrooms in Demergasso-Bava Hall use the technology to live-stream courses to the Stockton campus, and two in Bizzini Hall are lecture classrooms that use the technology for recording course content. The individual faculty teaching in these classrooms can decide if those recordings are available to students.
“We’re not using nearly the full strength of this,” said Jerry Anderson, Media Productions Specialist at the Office of Information Technology (OIT), “only 40 to 50 percent of the recordings from the TV classrooms are being given out.”.
“The technology is there, but it’s up to the teachers … as students request it more, more faculty will know to offer it to their classes,” said Anderson.
As of Oct. 7, there are 3,000 hours of content recorded and 340,000 views by 9,611 different users.
“We started using the recording technology after a few professors asked for it,” said Anderson, “Lectures are the intellectual property of the faculty who present them, so OIT can only record classes with the teachers’ permission.
“Some teachers use the recordings for self-evaluation at the end of the year,” said Anderson, “I’ve had faculty ask to record their syllabus talk so they can save class time on the first day.”
The recording technology can also be used to provide supplemental videos to individual students or whole classes. This would be especially helpful for both students and faculty when it comes to covering difficult concepts when there is a shortage of time in class. Class recordings can also be a great study tool before tests.
If you are participating in a course in one of the TV classrooms and want to have access to class recordings, speak with your professor. “Every progression to a new level has been driven by the students,” said Anderson.
