The College of the Arts (COA) at California State University, Stanislaus is committed to providing outstanding entertainment featuring the works of students and visiting artists for both the students and the surrounding communities.
The Department of Theatre compiles a variety of performances that range from improv to comedy. “Cross My Heart: Tales of Hope” will be an original student production directed by David Razowsky, the former Second City Training Artisitic Director, which will run from Mar. 8-17 at 8 p.m. and Mar. 11 and 18 at 2 p.m on the Mainstage.
Following production will be William Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors” at the Stanislaus Amphitheatre directed by returning Chicago-based guest artist Dan Gately, who directed last spring’s “Romeo and Juliet.” Closing the semester will be the annual Dance Concert directed by Kitsy Olson and performed by CSUS students. Look out for this concert May 18 and 19.
In addition, the Department of Theatre will also include an improv show “Razowsky and Hunicutt” on Feb. 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. Also, Rob Nash’s one-man show called “Holy Cross Sucks!” set to debut later this semester. Nash offers a comedic twist to typical high school life through the 20 high school characters he created. The performance will be on Mar. 22 and 23 at 8 p.m. on the Mainstage.
The Music Department has created a great calendar of events including performances by the Concert Chorale, Chamber Singers, composition festivals, faculty recitals, guest artist recitals, as well as jazz, band, orchestra, and wind ensemble concerts. The first performance to be held on campus is a faculty recital featuring saxophonist Keith Kelly on Thursday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m.
The Art Department will be featuring new pieces in the Art Gallery. Currently, the Gallery is hosting the work of California State University, Sacramento professor Robert Ortbal featuring a mixture of sculpture and print pieces. The exhibition will run from Feb. 6 – Mar. 8 and an Artist Talk this Thursday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. Beginning Mar. 8, the gallery will feature art from the faculty of Modesto and Merced Junior Colleges. The event will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and an Artist Talk beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Following the faculty exhibition, there will be two student shows. The first will be the Turlock Regional High School Show that will feature the works of local high school students that will run from Apr. 16-20. Closing out the year is the BFA/BA Gradutes Senior Exhibition from Apr. 30-May 24 with a reception on May 4 at 6:30 p.m. which will feature an Artist Talk at 7:00 p.m.
