Holi is an event that brings together people and is full of happiness, color and new beginnings.
Students from California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State), BIPSHI, Jakra and Merced Community College Jakara put on an event at Donnelly Park on April 15th to celebrate this holiday.
Jasmin Gill (senior, Psychology) started Jakra at Stan State.
In collaboration with the other two organizations, Holi was a success.
“I have not played Holi since nine years,” Gill said. “This was a social to bring people together.”
This colorful event definitely brought people together. There was a lot of color and water involved, and there was no leaving without getting some color on you.
To people like Gaganpreet Gill (freshman, Business Administration), this was something completely new.
“This is my first time playing Holi. It was fun and entertaining experience. I loved seeing all the color,” Gill expressed.
All of her friends agreed with her. They were also playing Holi for the first time and they said it was an experience to remember.
Getting to re-live Holi was a reason that some people attended the event. One of those people is Sandeep Kaur (senior, Nursing).
“I’m getting to play Holi after a good ten years since I have played Holi,” Kaur said.
She just feels like a part of Holi was missing.
“I just wish they were playing music,” she added.
All three interviewees said they had a pretty good experience and it was a great way to meet new people and since it is a part of our Indian culture, we enjoyed it even more.
Holi is typically celebrated in March and April, so look out for events next year at Stan State and the surrounding communities. Holi is set to be on March 1st in 2018.
