Social media has become such a normative part of millennials everyday lives, which makes people question if a social media cleanse is necessary. Many people think taking a break from social media can reduce anxiety, stress, and even sometimes depression.
Let’s see what millennials in this generation have to say about taking a step back and living life outside of their phones.
Caylie O’Neal (Business, Senior) agrees social media can be detrimental to peoples overall self esteem. O’Neal says, “You allow yourself to look at other people’s ‘perfect’ lives and you start comparing yourself to them. I do think a cleanse for everyone would be beneficial however it is easier said than done”.
Nichole Meyer (Communication, Senior) doesn’t have any experience doing a social media cleanse but thinks it only works on a case by case bases. “I think social media cleanses can help with mental health problems and can be negative for people. I think if it’s causing people issues than yes, delete it and go on a cleanse,” Meyer said.
Abel Vincent, a CSU Alumni explains how social media escalated from personal use to business use.
Vincent states, “ I always think about going on a cleanse but since I graduated I obtained a career that has some aspects of social media. Almost every company to date is apart of Instagram or twitter, so when you’re the person posting behind the scenes it is kind of hard to escape”.
Hashim Makki (business/senior) gave up social media because he was tired of seeing the same thing every day. Makki gave his insight to his positive reaction and how he felt in the midst of his cleanse.
Makki states, “I did a cleanse from twitter and within the first 2 days I immediately missed it, however after that I started to forget about it. I didn’t catch myself trying to open the twitter app anymore.” After about a week Makki felt he could actually get his work done.
During the cleanse, Makki also realized how he didn’t talk to a lot of people outside of social media. “It made me realize how big of a part it played in my own life with my own friends,” Makki said.
