Stan State is home to a student resource known as Basic Needs, whose mission is to ensure no Warrior faces hunger or hardship alone.

The program supports students by offering nutritious food, essential hygiene items, and emergency resources to help them stay focused on their academic goals without worrying about where their next meal is coming from.

One of the most well-known services Basic Needs provides is the Warrior Food Pantry, located in room 128 of the Student Services building. Students can pick up 10 free items each week. These items range widely, offering students flexibility based on personal preference or dietary needs.

The pantry offers basics like ketchup, beans, chips, frozen meals and cereal, along with snacks that are convenient for students rushing between classes. Essential household and hygiene items such as soap, shampoo and toilet paper are also available, giving students access to more than just food.

Elaine Suarez, the Food Security Operations Specialist for Basic Needs, explained how the pantry stays stocked and sustainable.

“Once in a while, we’ll get donations, but that’s not the primary source. We do purchase, we utilize a food bank out of Manteca called “Second Harvest” where we can get a bulk of food for a discounted rate,” Suarez said.

Janet James (Sophomore, Computer Information Systems), a student volunteer for Basic Needs, talked about the program.

“Students can come in here every week. They can grab their items if they need any, and they’re able to check it out for free,” James said.

Leilani Larios (Senior, Math and Theater) talked about their own experience using the pantry and how they have utilized it as a student who has a busy schedule or long days on campus.

“I tend to gravitate towards the snack stuff for breakfast, any of my daily essentials if I’m on campus for long hours because of theater,” Larios said.

Students visiting the Warrior Food Pantry will find a rotating selection of items, including cereals, canned meats, vegetables, snacks and various essentials. Availability changes week to week depending on supply, but the pantry’s goal remains consistent; to offer reliable support for students who may need it throughout the semester.
