Pole-vaulting alumna granted NCAA scholarship

California State University, Stanislaus alumna pole-vaulting standout Alycia Wagner received the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Minority Enhancement Program Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics.
The NCAA Minority Enhancement Program is developed to increase opportunities for qualified minority and female candidates. The scholarships are a one-time, non-renewable award given to college graduates who will be entering their initial year of postgraduate studies.
“I was excited,” Alycia Wagner said.
“It took about five months to find out [that I won].”
Wagner, the first CSU Stanislaus student to win the award, will receive a $6,000 scholarship for enrolling in a sports-related academic program as a full-time graduate student in the 2013-14 academic year.
Alycia was a three-time All-American pole vaulter at CSU Stanislaus, and is currently serving as an assistant coach this spring at California State University, Los Angeles. Wagner will depart for Indiana State University in August where she will pursue a master’s degree in coaching at Indiana State University.
Indiana State University is a Division I school in Terre Haute, Indiana. Wagner will be a graduate assistant for the university’s track and field program.
“I have been accepted into ISU, Indiana State University’s graduate program,” Wagner said.
“I will be earning a master’s degree in Coaching, while teaching college P.E. courses and coaching for the university’s track and field program.”
Wagner went on to explain she would eventually like to coach for a DI program or become an athletic director.
While enrolled at CSU Stanislaus, Wagner was actively involved in campus and community relations and served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Wagner also encouraged current Stanislaus students to get involved in the campus community.
“Set goals for yourself and achieve them,” Wagner said. “Make your dreams a reality.”
Wagner is one of 13 recipients to receive this award out of all NCAA divisions. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at CSU Stanislaus in Fall 2012.
