Dear Distress Signal,
There’s a girl on campus that I really want to talk to, but she’s always staring at her phone. How can I start a conversation if I can’t make eye contact?!?
-Invisible
Dear Invisible,
“Excuse me,” is seriously the best phrase for getting attention ever invented.
After that, conversation starters are endless, but let it fit the situation. Ask for directions (and by directions, I mean, “I’m terrible at finding my way around, would you mind showing me?”) to Bizzini, DBH, etc. Conversations can unfold nicely on the way to made-up destinations.
Just don’t come on too strong initially; even one conversation is reason enough to say “hi” to a person the next time they cross your path.
Let the greetings and smiles build a bit before making a move.
Best wishes,
The Distress Signal
