It has only been a couple of months since the strike hit two California State University campuses.
The voices against the hierarchy of the CSU system were last heard at the CSU East Bay and Dominguez Hills strike on Nov. 17, 2011.
Silence has taken over the California Faculty Association (CFA) on the 23 campuses of the CSU system. Some might think this means the CFA’s battle with the Chancellors office is at an end. As it turns out, the war has just begun. These moments of peace may just be the calm before the storm.
From April 16 to 27, members of the CFA will be voting on whether a strike is necessary or not in case their current negotiation process fails. Currently the CFA is accepting pledges from CFA members indicating if they will be voting “yes” on the upcoming April 16 to 27 votes.
“The sheer volume of pledges we have received from faculty ought to send a clear message to the Chancellor that faculty are united in support of a fair contract and are willing to stage the largest strike in American higher ed history if that is what it takes,” said CFA President Lillian Taiz according to the CFA website.
There were a number of issues being expressed by the faculty during the strike last year but the promised pay raises that were never given for 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 pay periods allowed the CFA to strike.
However, this potential strike covers a broader spectrum of grievances related to the negotiations over a new contract for CFA members.
According to the CFA, some of the issues being contested revolve around proposals in the contract that might move the CSU system towards a profit oriented model and inhibit the faculty in their ability to provide a decent education to its students.
If negotiations fail to the point that a strike is eminent, it won’t just affect two campuses. It will affect all 23 CSU campuses across the state. It’s called a rolling strike. For two days a campus or campuses will strike, when their strike has ended another campus or campuses will take up the torch and strike for two days.
“I think the CSU will eventually agree to a fair settlement after testing the resolve of the faculty, which is what they did in the previous two contract battles” said Taiz.
It still remains to be seen if the CFA will strike, however. We will know more in April.
