For first time freshman, the process of registering for classes can be a horrifying experience. However, we have major advisers to help people develop the skills to design their schedule around their major requirements.
These skills learned from advisers include identifying prerequisite courses for your major, searching through the online catalog, planning a schedule and finally the ability to add and drop classes. There really is not that much to it.
The use of major advisers should be mandatory for freshmen and sophomore level students. These newer students still require some help in knowing and understanding what classes are best for them to take and why. As students move through their college careers, they inevitably get very good at registering for their classes. Therefore, major advising should be optional for junior and senior level students.
Each major has specific classes recommended for those students who wish to graduate. I know that in the Communication Studies department, there is a sheet of paper with a checklist of all recommended prerequisite classes and all mandatory classes that must be completed before graduating.
I am not saying that it is unnecessary to have an adviser. Advisers can be invaluable in helping pick the classes best suited for you. I am only saying that if you are unable to keep an appointment with your adviser prior to your registration date and you are above sophomore standing, you should still be able to register without seeing them.
I have a great adviser. For over a year I have requested her input, but I have not NEEDED her to help me register for my classes. Having to meet with an adviser prior to registration has only added to my already very busy and stressful schedule.
