A number of students wanted me to discuss classroom attendance policies. I was astonished to hear how many students were upset at the thought of attendance being a part of your grade. I know that I am usually the sympathetic student but this week is a little different. I love classes that grade on attendance!
Let me tell you why.You are paying thousands of dollars for a great education. Whether or not the teacher is the most boring lecturer in the world, the material being taught has been developed for a reason. Having that knowledge is what sets you apart from someone who doesn’t have their degree. If all you are doing is cramming your head with knowledge and taking a test then forgetting the information, you are cheating yourself.
As someone who goofed off more than their fair share in college, I have learned one very important thing: the more you go to class, the better you understand the material. The better you understand the material, the longer the knowledge stays in your head. The longer the knowledge stays in your head, the better you do on tests, especially cumulative tests at the end of the semester.
I have been there and am still in the same boat. Learn from this old guy, don’t make the same mistakes I did. Get the most out of your college experience. You will always do better if you go to class, and who knows, you may even learn something.
