As Thanksgiving approaches, homesick students plan their trips for the holiday, or really just for that weekend.
California State University, Stanislaus stu- dents only get Thursday and Friday off the week of Thanksgiving. Since the holiday is on Thursday, that doesn’t really give anyone time to travel home. Those who live far away would probably not even get home until Thursday evening, when the holiday is almost over.
If students, staff and faculty got a little more time off, especially right before finals begin, everyone would be happier. There are some easy ways to give us the time off we need, just by changing up what we already do.
Back in October, there were no classes on Wednesday the tenth in observation of Columbus Day, which was actually on that Monday, the eighth. The school plans holidays on certain days to ensure that we spend a certain amount of hours in each class. Sometimes if we have too many Monday, Wednesday, Friday holidays they will move them over to a Tuesday or Thursday in or- der to distribute the hours we get off more evenly.
So it does not really make sense that they switched it from a Monday to a Wednesday be- cause everyone is still getting to miss the same classes.
In addition, other CSU campuses such as Chi- co State and San Fransisco State University receive the entire Thanksgiving week off.
Taking this all into consideration, it might have been smart for us not to observe Columbus Day as a holiday and instead receive that time on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
Moving the holiday schedule around like that would have been a good way for us to get an extra day off for a more widely celebrated holiday. Just saying. Who knows, maybe the school is skilled in a certain holiday planning etiquette that I’m not aware of.
In the mean time, this year’s calendar is set so we will just have to cope with only getting Thursday and Friday off. To make your trip home for the holiday a little easier, I recommend planning ahead and finishing all the school work you have before you leave. It gives you extra time to relax and enjoy the break.
Finally, wish for the best and next year we will hopefully be able to enjoy our stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie while it is still hot.
