This past weekend I had the opportunity to represent the Signal at the Young Women’s Conference in Livingston. While we were there to empower the 500+ girls in attendance, I left the event feeling empowered by these young girls.
Many organizations attended the conference to share information about their careers and services. This gave the young girls a chance to explore different opportunities.
It was especially rewarding when some of the girls were so excited to work on a story with me on the spot. They went out and gathered their own interviews. These girls were part of the school yearbook class and already had a passion for storytelling. In less than five minutes, they had quotes and were ready to put their story together.
It was this type of passion that will stick with me forever. Being a part of the Signal, I was happy to be able to show what kind of work that I do. It was a rewarding feeling to show a career path that is not particularly gender normative. There were so many nursing programs in attendance, so journalism was a nice change.
There is nothing wrong with nursing, but providing other alternatives was worth-while because not every girl aspires to become a nurse.
The organizers of the conference also appreciated our coverage of the event because the main local news outlets were simply not interested. Covering the Kite festival was more important to them than empowering young girls.
This was their loss and our gain because this event was definitely worthwhile. Check out the article the girls worked on here.
