There is a misconception that Student Athletes can just “shake things off” and continue their day to day routine without stress. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death in student athletes.
Many athletes struggle silently with negative mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression but it goes unnoticed. The successes of their sport can create a facade that their life is perfect and that they are happy doing what they are doing with no complaints.
In this video documentary we listen to Stanislaus State track and field athletes, Eris Hutchins and Mila Real, tell their story of how competing with mental illness has affected them. They hope that sharing their compelling stories will help more student athletes who may be experiencing similar things to feel supported in their journey and even encourage them to seek help if needed.
