Stan State’s Men’s and Women’s soccer teams are putting up a fight in their respective divisions and working their way to the top.
This past Friday night, Oct. 24, the men’s and women’s soccer teams faced the Chico State Wildcats at Warrior Stadium.
In the first half of the men’s game, both Chico and Stan State fought off any scoring chances for each other, keeping the half scoreless. During the second half of the game, Stan State scored the first goal of the game at the 59th minute.
Forward Gerardo Flores No.9 scored with a header, assisted by defender Samuel Villanueva No.17. Shortly after, Flores scored once again with an assist by defender Christian Brenes No.2 and midfielder/forward Emmanuel Duran No.14, making the score 2-0 for the Warriors.
For the rest of the second half, the Wildcats fought hard to try and secure a goal, but couldn’t break through the Warriors’ defense. In turn, the Warriors won and improved their record to 12-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the CCAA, remaining unbeaten.
The women’s team also battled hard, but they fell short in a close 2-1 loss to the Wildcats.
In the first half, the Wildcats took an early lead over the Warriors with a goal by midfielder Makayla Cruz-Martinez No.10, assisted by midfielder Taylor McMahon No.12, and defender Klayre Barres No.17. Soon after, the Wildcats secured their second goal of the night by Taylor McMahon No.12.
In the second half, the Warriors were able to secure their first goal of the night when Forward Jocelin Roa was fouled in the box and received a penalty kick. Roa took the penalty shot and scored, giving the Warriors their goal of the night.
For the rest of the second half, the Warriors fought hard to give the Wildcats’ defense a late push to secure another goal, but the Wildcats held them off for a 2-1 victory.
Two days later, on Oct. 26, both teams played again in Seaside, CA, against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters.
At the beginning of the men’s soccer game, Monterey’s player, Will Seargeant No. 22, scored the first goal of the game, getting his team on the board. 10 minutes later, Warrior Christian Brenes No. 2 scored a goal with an assist from Landon Leal Ruiz No. 8.
Throughout the second half, the Warriors continued to take shots and got three more goals, securing their win. These goals were taken by Emmanuel Duran No.14, Adrian Yepez No. 2, and Alexis Cervantes No. 3 with assists by Landon Leal Ruiz, Gerardo Flores, and Sebastian Carbajal.
After scoring these goals, Stan State secured a win, improving its record to 13-0-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the CCAA. With this win, the men’s team clinched its place in the CCAA Tournament.
After the men’s game, the women’s team played and also secured a win against the Otters.
In the first half, Stan State’s Aliah Avila No.10 scored the first goal off a penalty kick in the first three minutes of the game. Then in the second half, Makeila Yancey No. 22 scored her first goal of the season with an assist by Haylee Sousa No. 7.
Their final score was 2-0, improving their record to 7-4-4 overall and 3-3-2 in the CCAA. Currently, the women’s team is tied for sixth place in the CCAA standings alongside Cal State San Marcos.
Next up on both teams’ schedules, they will be traveling to Carson, California, on Oct. 31st to face Cal State Dominguez Hills. The women’s team is scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m., and the men’s team is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
