It is impossible to wander the depths of the internet featuring memes that are hilarious and feel completely relatable without running into the mentions of a sugar daddy.
I have run into a lot of meme accounts on Twitter and Instagram that post photos like the one which was found on ifunny.co which portrays an attractive young woman who is well dressed accompanying an older gentleman.
This peaked a genuine interest regarding the origin of the keyed term sugar daddy and what getting a sugar daddy would actually entail. Upon doing research on Priceonomics, I discovered that the first mention of a sugar daddy in the United States was actually in 1887.
Businessman Adolph Spreckels, who was widely known as a man who got away with murder due to his social and monetary status was the United States’ first reported sugar daddy.
Spreckels, the then San Francisco native, married Alma de Bretteville. Bretteville was only 22 while Spreckels was 46, totaling up a 24-year age difference.
According to the Huffington Post, Bretteville had always made it clear that she had her eyes on the prize—monetarily that is.
Therefore, I presume that age was not a factor. Like the saying goes, “age is nothing but a number.” If we were to alter that phrase to fit the case of Bretteville, it could be said that “age is nothing but a number…A bank account balance is all but numbers.”
So why such a speculation with today’s generation and sugar daddies? It could be assumed that we want to get what we want without putting in the work. Or it could be seen as nothing more than just talk to get a few laughs.
Regardless, this got me thinking: Could it really be that easy to find someone to provide for you in exchange for some sugar?
This is where things got interesting and resulted in me joining a sugar daddy website to investigate.
The outcome:
After doing some research about which sugar daddy websites are free and still offer enough to actually make contact with prospective sugar daddies I made my choice.
Then it was time for the signup process, which proved to be as simple as making any type of social media account. There were just three pages which asked for basic information such as your birthdate, your height, ethnicity, etc.
What followed was a search through various profiles. The free account gave me access to narrow my search by age, country and state.
Narrowing my search to California and a very generous 21-99 age range I quickly realized that there are more—many more—younger males on this website than I expected.
I came across the profile of a 29-year-old male from Santa Monica, CA, whose profile read along the lines of being a great guy for a girl to take care of, but upon further inspection I came across a contradictory post further down on his profile.
He said that he wanted someone who respected him, but at the same time wanted a good time. Seems like he wants the best of both worlds.
On the Opposite end of the age spectrum, I found a 60-year-old’s account. Unlike the 29-year-old’s profile, this man provided much more information than the two sentences in his biography.
He stated that he simply wanted someone who could keep up and travel with him since many of his friends have already passed away. Clearly noted was that he was not specifically on the lookout for a relationship, but if things turned into one he was all for it.
Something very iffy about the whole website is that those with sugar daddy accounts have the option to not disclose their annual income.
It must be noted that this sugar daddy website does their best to counter the potential for a scam by coming with an option which allows the daddy to verify their income. And once they do, they have a label on their profile which basically proves that they earn what they claim.
Dishearteningly, just like regular social media sites, this website has the potential to be a place to look for secret relationships while already being in one. I actually came across one.
This profile belonged to a 29-year-old who is from Los Angeles, and honestly my heart broke when I came across it. He is seeking a “discrete and infrequent sugar baby.” And I for one am seeking a garbage can for me to throw up in.
Infidelity, in my opinion, is never the answer. If you do not want to be with someone anymore, tell them. There is no use nor a need to be living a lie.
After half an hour of clicking through pages of California profiles it became evident that only 5% of them actually showed their annual income. Most, if not all of that 5%, were in the $200,000 range.
With full honesty, it was very difficult for me to even create an account on the website because it just did not feel right. Something in me told me that I for one was not made for the sugar daddy life.
Thinking about even having a profile on a site like this just didn’t sit well with me. Whether it be the traditionalist in me, the awkward whole of me, or both, I could not wait to delete my account.
I must make it very clear that I am not against the whole sugar daddy/baby lifestyle or relationship. Do you, I always say that. It just simply was not for me.
