Beginning April 6, the City of Turlock started making improvements to the crosswalks on Crowell Rd.
These crosswalks border the California State University, Stanislaus, which means there is often foot/bike traffic throughout the day. Students who choose to park in the residential area across from campus and those that live in the apartments wish to have improved safety.
“I used to live at Park Place and used the crosswalk near the pond every day,” Andrew Roberts (senior, Computer Science and Music) said. “Drivers often didn’t stop for pedestrians, so improvements should be made if they’ll help stop drivers more often.”
Pedestrians often experience issues with traffic in this area and see potential areas of improvement.
“Possible improvements could be something like embedded lights in the road,” Roberts said. “Pair this with a pedestrian button to alert incoming traffic.”
Because the improvements will cause traffic delays, the University suggests taking other ways in order to park in lots three and four off of Crowell Rd.
“The campus community should expect traffic delays on Crowell Road during this time,” Campus Communications said in an email to students. “If possible, utilizing alternate entrances to campus is highly recommended.”
One alternate entrances is turning from Monte Vista Ave. to University Circle. Another option students can take is Geer Rd. to Calaveras Dr., which then allows students to take the option of going through the round-about to Mariposa Dr. or right onto Merced Way.
The map below has alternate routes highlighted.
Although construction began at the start of spring break, these improvements will be taking place for almost a month, ending on May 1. Plan the drive to school wisely and use alternate entrances in order to avoid traffic on Crowell Rd.
